Easy hike to Glen Falls, a typical high mountain waterfall, just beneath the brow on the east side of Lookout Mountain.

Glen Falls on Lookout MountainWhile Glen Falls may be a typical high mountain falls (which means the amount of water in the falls is determined by the amount of recent rain), this is anything but a typical hike. The pathway allows hikers to take an up-close look at the unusual geology of Lookout Mountain and enjoy a waterfall to boot. From the trailhead, which is actually a pulloff on the usually busy Ochs Highway, the trail begins as a slightly downhill affair that is wide enough for a family hike.

As you hike to the falls you are walking about 200 feet below the top of the mountain. This last 200 feet is a rock wall that encircles the brow of the mountain, most prominently at the point near Chattanooga, but it is visible in many places. This trail will allow you the opportunity to explore a portion of this feature of Lookout Mountain, which is the reason we ranked it as special.

As you approach the falls the trail begins to rise, becoming a scramble over bare rock, then into one of the eroded passageways of Lookout Mountain's brow. Once through this passage the rock opens up and the sounds of Glen Falls fill the air, even when waterflow is light. A flat, fieldstone covered bridge takes you across a small pond. To see the falls cross over the bridge and turn around. Deep in the crevice is the source of the sound.

The trail does not end here. Once across the bridge continue .1 mile to a set of rock steps on the right side of the trail, climbing to the source of the stream. After passing through a cave, the path comes out above the falls. A word of caution: When you come out of the cave you are about 30 feet above Glen Falls, so don't go if you are afraid of heights. Be cautious with young children as well.
