Nice trail to Anna Ruby Falls. Not too difficult; I don't agree with the strenuous rating and I think the times and distances are inaccurate. I completed it in 4hrs and 15min. in a steady downpour; as opposed to the 6 hours listed. Much easier going from the falls to Unicoi, but you do have to climb the ridge in both directions. There are a couple of dicey parts where I wouldn't want to take small kids. There are a couple of creek crossings where you might get your feet wet if it's rained recently.

For us (relatively new hikers), this trail was more treacherous than strenuous. Trail is very narrow alot of the way. But that's what we find enjoyable in hiking--not knowing what to expect! Overall, it was a good hike.

I hiked this in late September and found it to be rather boring and not very strenuous at all...I'd say moderate at best. There was really only one decent uphill portion where you gain about 1000 feet, but it spread over a long distance and I never felt really tired or out of breath. The scenery is very boring with no nice views, but there was one section that might have a nice view in the summer. The only pay off is Anna Ruby Falls at the end. I hiked from Unicoi to the falls and back and it only took a little over 4 hours and that was with me stopping to take pictures, etc. So not the best trail, but the falls make it worth it.

If you're looking for a long hike that won't kill you, try hiking this one out and back for a total of nearly 10 miles. I started from Unicoi and hiked to the falls and back with some friends. Great scenery and winter views with some good stopping spots along the way and a gorgeous (albeit crowded) waterfall at the halfway point. There are some steep sections, but nothing too long or steep. Just a great overall workout. Doable in less than the 6 hours listed at the trailhead also.

Hiked this 2/07 and did it starting at Unicoi. I found the few uphills a bit strenuous but those were few and once elevation was reached, it was not difficult. There was still a bit of snow on the ground when we started out. Overall, it was scenic and beautiful...a lovely way to spend the day.

A great work out. Hiked late April 2007. I hike a lot and agree with a rating of strenuous. We hiked from the park to the falls with packs. The Hemlock groves are something to see.

I do agree that this trail is not 'strenuous' insofar as the incline is not as bad as one might think by looking at the map. BUT I had great difficulty with the narrowness of the trail as much of the footing was difficult over tree roots, and the ravines were quite deep. One misstep and you would be a goner. I would not take pets nor youngsters on this trail. But it is quite lovely.

Explored some of this trail while visiting Anna Ruby Falls. Very pretty! Must do next year.

11/10/2007. Definitely a challenge. The path is quite narrow in places, I would not recommend taking small children on this hike. With a lunch break, we managed this hike in a little over 4 hours.
