This is the first hike I've taken since moving to GA... GREAT family hike, the uphill trek is more than a little moderate to get to the falls, but worth the burn!

Hiked this is combinations with Johns mountain loop, making this into about a 5 mile hike. The first part of the Keown hike (going counter clockwise) was made very difficult due to what looked like relatively recent fire damage, and MANY dead and downed trees over the trail. As it was on the side of a steep slope, there was no way to go around most, and I had to crawl under several trees. This trail could use some maintenance, or at least someone with a chainsaw passing through. Still, the falls was running at the time, so the hike was worth it. Also, on the descent back to the parking area, yellowjackets have made a nest inside a tree beside the trail (just around the spot where you leave the cliff walls). They were swarming fairly aggressively as we passed (fortunately did not get stung).

Hiked 4/4/09. Had wanted to see these falls for years, but wanted to wait until I knew there was plenty of water. After our wet spring we have been having we were not disappointed. We arrived early enough that we only passed one person until we came down the mountain. By then it was lunch time and the parking lot became packed while we were enjoying our lunch in the picnic area. Very pleasant outing.

This was a nice quick hike for me and two 13 year olds and a 12 year old. I planned to hike this as a figure 8 with John's Mountain trail, but had to turn back when starting John's Mountain because of a ankle injury to one of the 13 year olds. The trail is very easy, with the exception of the "stairs" immediately before the overlook. The "falls" were barely a trickle in late July 2009. Overall, though nice scenery and a leisurely hike.
