Overall rating: 5 Scenic rating: 5 Difficulty rating: 4 Nice trail with pretty stream. You can go on the loop or the trail to the "top" of the mountain. Don't park at the campsite, you can drive farther up. Also, state road 241 sign is hard to see, follow the bear creek signs.

Overall rating: 4 Scenic rating: 4 Difficulty rating: 3 Hiked this trail as described in J. Malloy's 50 hikes book. This only takes you on the shorter 3 mile loop. Going clockwise, the first part of the trail is excellent, with many small stream crossings, and of course the fantastic Gennett Poplar. The 2nd part of the trail, once you get on the old forest service road is not very exciting. But, you do get to quite a descent once you reenter the woods. It's surprising, because you don't even realize you've climbed that much over the first 3/4 of the hike.

Mountain Biking/ Hiking

Overall rating: 5 Scenic rating: 5 Difficulty rating: 3 Ideal for mountain biking. Took the loop on Christmas day 2008. It took me around hour and 15 minutes going fast.
in the last mile, there is a fork, where a sign is missing. About a mile after the Pinhoti-Bear Creek loop crossing look for a single track trail around a corner. It has just a small post with hike/Bike signs. It goes downhill straight to the Bear Creek Loop parking lot. I am not sure where the other trail ends. perhaps in the bear creek campground.
It was getting dark I was unsure at that point.

Overall rating: 4 Scenic rating: 5 Difficulty rating: 2 We went on the short loop and it was my favorite hike of our trip. Love crossing the little streams. Take waterproof footwear. The parking is a little confusing...we wound our way along a tiny one-way mountain road hoping now one else would meet us coming the other direction. Reading other reviews, I think we were supposed to park further back and hike up to the trail entrance.

Overall rating: 3 Scenic rating: 4 Difficulty rating: 4 We tried this hike for our annual New Years Day hike...it started off great, but then the trail was poorly marked, so there was one point, even after looking at directions/map that we felt we were wandering around lost...
The big poplar tree was cool, and the trail is actually pretty- except when we wandered around wondering where we were... Worth a try, but beware so you don't get lost. ^_^
