North Georgia Mountain
Outfitters, Ellijay

Saturday, April 23, 2005

My husband & I hiked the .09 tenths of a mile trail from the parking area to the top of Springer Mountain. It was awesome. It was on my 60th birthday 4-19-05. We have always wanted to see a part of the Appalachian Trail. The path was easy to follow and just seeing the plaques at the top was as breathtaking as the views. Had a picnic lunch and plan to come back and bring our kids and grandkids. Had a GPS and it was on the mark as to the altitude of Springer Mountain. Will be back to do more trails in the area. It is a beautiful place. Well kept up. The road leading up to the parking lot was exciting too. We saw a white-tailed deer.

April 19, 2005 Hiking part of the Appalachian Trail has always been one of our goals. So for my 60th birthday my husband and I did the .9 tenths of a mile to the top of Springer Mtn. It was awesome. Trail is easy to follow and the view is breathtaking. Had a picnic lunch at the top. Seeing the markers at the top was chilling. Will be taking our children and grandchildren up soon. Want to also do some more of the longer trails in the area. Directions to the trail were perfect and the dirt road up to the parking lot was fun and very clean as was the trail itself. We saw a white-tailed deer & an eagle. We now want to do a trail near Mt. Katahdin in Maine soon. Just to say we walked on part of such a great National Scenic Trail System was so rewarding. We used the directions and info from the internet and the best map was the INFO-MAP for the Georgia Mtns.,listing alot of off roads, gravel and dirt roads, forest service roads and trail crossings. We also had a GPS. What a way to remember your 60th birthday!

Went on March 17, 2005. Light Snow was on Springer Mountain. Rocks were slippery and mud caked the trail. Very easy to get lost. White Blazes need to be repainted or re-administered within visible distances. Very easy to fall off the trail. If you have a map use it. Stay on the trail and do not follow the blue blazes to the shelters if you want to see the plaque. I didnt get a chance to because snow was falling and the temperature was dropping. The sign at the parking lot says .9 tenths of a mile. NOT TRUE. Its more like 1.9 to 2.0 miles. Stay on the trail and do not venture off. Terrain is sloping and rocky. Im going to go back and see the plaque one day. I didnt see it, but I heard it was awesome. Do the trail. FS 42 is very acessible with an SUV or truck. dont try to get a car up there unless you have large ground clearance and 4 wheel drive. Its beautiful in the snow. The AT in georgia is one of the best sections of the trail and you meet fascinating people on the trail. I am planning to do sections to Woody Gap next spring. BUY A GA AT map. IT Helps. Dont do Georgia without one

I recently visited friends in Gainseville and was excited to discover by accident that the fabled AT "ended" in Georgia. I made it my quest to find the Southern Terminus. My friend and I drove to the day parking and hiked to the terminus and back. It was a thrill! Pretty easy and very beautiful! Saw an eagle and a gorgous "field" of ferns. I want to do more. (Don't forget to write in the book.)

An easier way to get to Springer Mountain is to take 52 east from Ellijay to the two apple markets (Big Creek Road) Turn left and follow this for about 15 miles and look for the white Baptist Church on the left. USFS 42 is opposite it. There is now a sign indicating Springer Mountain. Thanks to USFS. Enjoy a lunch at the shelter. A spring is nearby. Nice, short day hike with the kids.

Fall has left the trail heavily covered in leaves, making it quite slippery. The trees are magnificent and the views are the best around.

This was my first hike ever. I heard it was a good trail to bring your dog along so I brought my ten month old Great Dane "Blueberry". I was there to late in the day and I wasn't sure if I could make top so I hiked in the other direction for an hour or so hoping to find Stover, but I didn't. I reached the top at 8 am . It was to hazy to see much of a view but on a clear day it must be great. I came across lots of ticks and poison ivy. It was easier than I thought. I wiegh 300 lbs and if I can do it anyone can. "blueberry loved it.I can't wait to see the rest of the AT

I took me over an hour to drive 17 miles on FS 42 from Suches to the Benton MacKaye trailhead. Compared to that ordeal, the hike up to Springer Mt and back down was a breeze. The well marked trail made for an easy 2 hour hike. What a rush to actually see the terminus plaque with my own eyes!

This is an easy hike to the southern terminus of the AT. Great for beginners who want to see where the great trail ends. The view from the top is beautiful. It is also great for an easy day hike and a stay in the shelter on the top of the mountain. Recent trial maintenence makes this hike even more pleasurable.

We hiked this trail July 5th and then returned July 11th with our dog. It is a nice trail for hiking with a dog. It was my dogs first hike with her backpack and the trail was, for the most part, wide enough that the pack did not rub on trees.

A fun hike, just make sure you head across the forest road when you want to go to Springer. There are no signs in the day parking area and our compass gave a bad reading near the map. Yes, we went the wrong way at first. Oops. It is time to buy that GPS I've always wanted.

This is a rocky trail and can be difficult. Last time I walked it (Summer, 98) the Benton MacKaye had a couple of spots where it was easy to get off track...my advice, if you intend to use this on the way back (or there), is study the map carefully and use the road as a guide.
