North Georgia Mountain
Outfitters, Ellijay

Wednesday, March 30, 2005

Started at Lake Winfield Scott, hiked up to the AT via Slaughter Creek Trail, took the AT to the top of Blood Mountain. Returned down the AT and then continued past the Slaughter Creek Trail to the Jarrad Gap trail to return to the lake. About an 8 mile hike. Very enjoyable. The first part of the Slaughter Creek Trail is easy and flat, but as it takes off up the mountain it turns into a pretty good hike. The portion of the AT that runs to the top of Blood Mountain seemed a little less strenuous. The hike back down the trail to Jarrad Gap was a relaxing stroll. A great day hike.

The trail is in great shape. Great use of hollow log culverts. I kind of disagree about the steepness. There were several areas that got pretty steep and difficult for me. But, I'll be 50 in September. It was a pleasure to see an obviuosly well-used trail in such good condition. Very clean.

Hiked the trail on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2003. Temperatures never rose above 32 degrees F. all day. The log bridge at the beginning of the hike is out. Take the bridge then turn left, walk behind the campground, over another bridge, to the road. Turn left and walk along the road a short while till you see the trail on the right. Trail is in good shape. We continued onto the top of Blood Mtn. Left Lake Winfield Scott at 11 am and returned by 4 pm (we took our time and stopped many times). Great day hike!

Hiked Sunday 7 July 2002. Hiked a loop from at Lake W. Scott to Slaughter Gap, up to Blood Mtn. summit and back to the gap, then from Slaughter Gap to Jarrard Gap, then back to the lake for a total of about 8.1 miles. The latter half of Slaughter Gap Trail has a considerable, steady incline, which seemed more difficult than the ascent from the Gap to the top of Blood Mtn. Unfortunately it was quite hazy, so the views from the top of the mountain were not spectacular, although we could tell that on a clear day they would be just that. We took our time, and spent about 2 hours from Lake to Summit and 1 hr 45 min back. Excellent day hike, and the 1 mile loop trail around the lake was a relaxing and scenic post-hike cool down walk. Trailhead is about 45 min from Dahlonega.

I hiked the trail Sunday Sept 30,2001. I ran into the man that maintains part of the trail. He was painting blazes. I enjoyed talking with him. Did not see anyone else. It felt great to get to the top. This is my third trip on this trail. Took AT to Jarrard Gap and down to Lake Winfield Scott.

Be careful, the trail has been re-routed and you may miss the entrance (like I did). Once you cross the wooden bridge at the begining of the trail, a sign says "slaughter creek trail to the left". You do turn left down a gravel road, but start looking to the right for the trail to go into the woods. Do not continue down the road past a few yars (100 at best). I missed the entrance and so did 2 other hikers I met coming back. Once you see houses on the gravel road, you have gone too far. This is a very nice trail. I can't wait to go back.

This is a nice trail for a nice day. The initial mile is a joy with a beutiful sampling of streams trees and vistas. The second mile is equally beutiful, but considerably more difficult. Getting to the top of the "hill" is always a good feeling, and standing on the AT at the end is always a nice sensation. Regin say "hike it!"

After climbing the side of Slaughter Mountain (Coosa Backcounty Trail) to reach Slaughter Gap, the Creek trail was a welcome downhill ride all the way to Lake Winfield Scott. Not many views, but would highly recommned this trail as your approach to the Blood Mountain section of the AT. mlbs

Great day hike!! Especially good hike to bring your dog along. Not many other folks on the trail until you get to the top of Blood Mountain.

Hiked the trail on 7/8/00, steady climb the entire trail but never difficult. Continued to Blood Mt. Look forward to hiking again after the leaves fall and the views are better.

1/15/00 great day hike for our middle school students. trail is in great shape. actually an easy climb considering the elevation gained. beautiful lunch enjoyed atop blood mountain. easy stroll back down with only a few slips from loose rocks or wet ground on the way back. we plan to use this trail to summit slaughter mtn. via the duncan ridge trail soon. (we could see slaughter mtn looming before us up the whole trail & thought it was blood mtn. it looks like an awesome spot for lunch!)

The trail is well kept. It is a steady uphill grade for nearly its entire length.

Entire first 2.2 miles (to Appalachian Trail) is a gradual uphill. A lot of elevation is gained.
