North Georgia Mountain
Outfitters, Ellijay

Sunday, April 24, 2005

Update the driving directions! There is no 193 W, it is 193 North from Lafayette. The road up the mountain to the trail has washed and deteriorated very badly. It is fine for a high-clearance SUV, but you will probably damage the under carriage of your personal sedan. The trail itself is in fine shape (much better than the road!), with several unique photo opportunities.

Hiked the trail today, enjoyed the views, but remember this is a climber's destination. Several Boy Scout troops and dozens of climbers scuttled everywhere. The trail is a means to an end, the end result is having access to an excellent training ground for novice to experienced climbers (see http://www.rockcreek.com/articles/climbing/rock_town/home.asp for more on this trail's true purpose.

My friends and I go to Pigeon Mountain very frequently. Rock Town is so beautiful and no other place in Georgia is like it. The last time there we realized that the actual top of Pigeon Moutain is on top of a big bolder at the end of the trail(are gps told us).I would not recommended this trail for children unless you keep a close eye on them. I also recommend checking out other areas around the mountain. There is also alot of wildlife in the area. We have seen snakes(not poisonous), deer, turkeys, and all types of birds. In springs and summer watch out for yellow jackets.

Guillermo, I didn't say it wasn't for families, I said parents should keep an eye on their kids, Pay attention when you read something!

I live in LaFayette, Georgia. On Bronco Road right next to Chamberlain. When our youth group decided we were going to Rocktown, I was excited! I've never been rock climbing before! Well, we took our church van up there. It took a while getting up that road though. But, it was worth it! When we got there, we got out our water, and a gatorade. We walked, and climbed, and had alot of fun. Rocktown is a very beautiful place. We got over to one of the higher climbs. I was climbing a little bit higher than them, and I found a LED light. Well, our youth leader jumped over there ang grabbed the light for me. My cousin's husband came over and said he would give me $20 for the light. I thought about it for a minute, than I said, "Ok!" On our way back through the trail, we saw some guys testing a new move they had made up. I think they called it Dynamo, or Dynamite or something like that. I hope that anyone else that ever goes up there has a wonderful time, because I sure did!

On June 29, 2002, my husband and I traveled from Tampa, Fl to the beautiful area of Rocktown for our first outdoor bouldering experience. We stayed in Lafayette 6/29/02 to 7/3/02 and drove the short ride to Rocktown every day. Even though it was a little wet (it rained in the afternoons, so we rose early morning for our bouldering)it was a beautiful trail and breathtaking boulders. The mile hike from the start of the trail to the Rocktown boulders is an easy, scenic one. The trail is well-built and well-kept, making it a pleasant hike. We saw several deer and a raccoon; bring your camera - you will want to remember every step of this. Driving up the mountain, we stopped at the Lookout and took some pictures of the gogeous view of the valley. I can't wait to return to Crockford-Pigeon Mountain! Loraine and Cal Hill

It is a good beginner's trail since it is an easy walk. We just went this past week-end (Nov. 11, 2000) so there was not much wildlife. We went with my brother's Cub Scout pack and some of my Scout troop. It makes a good place to rappell although we only did free climbing. Young children should be supervised carefully when letting them climb on the rocks to prevent falls.

I SOLO HIKED THIS TRAIL 7-1-00, STARTING AT 945 AM. VERY EASY, WIDE, WELL WORN TRAIL. MARKINGS COULD STAND A LITTLE ATTENTION, BUT TRAIL IS SO OBVIOUS MARKINGS ARE HARDLY NEEDED. GOOD PARKING RIGHT AT TRAIL HEAD. I WAS SURPRISED TO FIND PEOPLE CAMPING ALONG THE FINAL STRETCH OF ROAD TO TRAIL HEAD, AND WITHIN 100 FT OF THE TRAIL HEAD. ENCOUNTED BETWEEN 25 AND 30 PEOPLE ON THIS HIKE..WILL PROBABLY HIKE AGAIN IN FALL BEFORE TIME CHANGE BUT WILL DO SO ON A SUNDAY EVENING HOPING TO HAVE TRAIL TO MYSELF. SO MANY PEOPLE I FELT I WAS INTRUDING TRYING TO EXPLORE THE MANY NOOKS AND COVES AMONG THE ROCKS AT ROCKTOWN. THIS IS A PLACE THAT SHOULD BE ENJOYED BY EVERYONE. AT THE END OF THE TRAIL IS A LARGE GROUP OF BOULDERS ON THE VERY TOP OF PIGEON MTN. SOME ARE AS LARGE AS A 2 STORY HOUSE. THEY ARE VERY EASY TO CLIMB ON IF YOU CHOOSE YOUR PATH CAREFULLY. LOTS OF ROCK CLIMBERS ENJOYING THE TOUGHER SIDE AS I WENT UP THE MORE GRADUAL SIDE. ON TOP OF THESE HUGE BOULDERS AND ON THE SIDES ARE CLEAR MARKINGS OF "WAVE LAPS", PROVING THAT THEY WERE MOSTLY COVERED BY WATER.
BOULDERS OF SANDSTONE HAVE SOME OF THE MOST UNUSUAL AND BEAUTIFULY SHAPED PATERNS I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED.
VIF YOU CARRY A HIKING STAFF OF WOOD, BE SURE YOU PUT A RUBBER COVER ON THE TIP, IT MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE IN STABILITY WHILE TRAVERSING THESE ROCKS. ALTHOUGH THIS IS A VERY SHORT HIKE (APPROX 2 MILES ROUND TRIP) PLAN ON SPENDING AT LEAST AN HOUR JUST EXPLORING ROCKTOWN OR YOU WILL MISS THE BEST PARTS OF HIKE.
NO VIEWS AT ALL DUE TO DENSENESS OF SURROUNDING FOREST. AFTER LEAVES FALL SOME OF THE BOULDER TOPS WILL PROBABLY HAVE SOME BREATH TAKING VIEWS.
EVEN A YOUNG CHILD CAN MAKE THIS TRIP AS WELL AS SENIORS IN FAIR TO GOOD SHAPE. TAKE SOME WATER...

A neat place to go, but don't know if I recommend it for families with small children. Saw 1 unattended child fall from a low rock while I was there. Totally the parents' fault. Parents take care and be responsible!

This trail is more than easy and the comments about it not being for family seem stupid to me (Personal opinion). I didn't see any animals and stayed 3 days. Anyway, almost no animal will attack you if you just stay away from it when you see it.

After 42 days of drought, the vegetation along the trail was dried up. However, the rock formations were incredible and it was fun exploring. It was crowded with many young people rock climbing and bouldering. Since Rock Town is in a Wildlife Management Area, hunting season had begun on 9/17 so we were concerned about the many hunters we saw on the drive up the mountain. However, with the crowds on the Rock Town trail, I was sure that they would not be hunting in the area. In spots at the switchbacks, the dirt/gravel road up Pigeon Mountain was difficult to maneuver in a car. We ran into a ranger on the trail and asked him about road conditions. He said that because of the drought, they could not grade the road but that it was generally well maintained.
