North Georgia Mountain
Outfitters, Ellijay

Be prepared for a lot of water crossings. The uphill part of this trail is steep at times. Expect a very obvious up/downhill for about half of the total trail. Very beautiful, however. Some of the sights were breathtaking-- even with all the summer foliage. A lot of falls and water. If you take the road to the upper trailhead-- make time to stop to see some of the great views on the way up. We didn't run into any other hikers on this trail, but we did see several mountain bikers going down the descent.

on a recent trip to the cohutta the gate was closed due to a land access problem ..... the only southern access to the trail now is brushwacking form bear creek camping area. Not for the meek of heart. Hils lake road needs to be reopened to allow southern access to the trail.

Hiked Mountaintown in FEB 2002. Very easy for the first 2 or 3 miles. Two very good campsites in the flat part. That's where your luck ends. After the first strenuous ascent to Rich Knob you come to a water crossing with a perfect campsite for 2 or 3. Just above this site are some beautiful falls. Do yourself a favor and hike from the bottom to the top. Kind of defeats the views going the other way.

My friend and I went to hike it this weekend but we couldn't find it. Supposedly, the is no such thing as Hill Creek Rd.. If I could get some directions I would love to try it out. Any info. on directions would be greatly appreciated.

We hiked from South to North, ascending to the upper trailhead. Had to park and walk about 2 miles on a gravel road to beginning of trail, using our own interpretation of "Private Property" and "No Trespassing". It had just rained several inches prior to our hike, so the creek was high and roaring. The trail started out pretty flat for the first couple of miles where we had to wade across the creek on several occasions. The trail started a nice ascent for a mile or so giving us a great view of cascades for several yards. It leveled out for about .5 miles crossing a creek with a great camping spot. Just past this crossing was a small waterfall: the most scenic view on the trail in my opinion. This waterfall marked the beginning of a tough ascent through green plantlife that lasted 1.5 to 2 miles or so to the North trailhead. Good trail for a two day backpacking trip with plenty of nice views and a good challenge.

We hiked this trail from South to North, ascending to Rich Knob. We had to park about 2 miles away from the lower trailhead using a loose interpretation of "Private Property" and "No Trespassing". It had just rained several inches prior to this backpacking venture, so the creek was awesomely high and roaring. The trail was pretty flat for the first couple of miles where we had to wade through the creek on occasion when crossing. Good scenery throughout. At about 2.5 miles the trail begins a difficult ascent taking you beside the cascades. The trail levels out for about .5 miles, crossing the creek where there is a nice camping spot. The best scene, in my opinion, is a small waterfall just past this creek crossing. The trail ends with a steep 2 mile or so ascent through green plantlife. Good trail for a two day backpacking trip with plenty of scenery and a good challenge.

Mountaintown Creek was a great trail. We started from the upper trailhead which made the waterfalls and the cascades somewhat anti-climatic but it was still beautiful. From the upper trailhead it is all downhill and flat. Going back to the car was a bit of a challenge though because whatever you go down you must go up. There was a stretch of about two miles I guess that was a steady climb up. It really was beautiful despite the rain and the 8 or more creek crossings were a good change of pace. We a trio of deer hunters and that was it. Awesome trail.

Backpacked/camped trail 5/6-7/2000. Trail was covered with recent fallen trees requiring several times to either crawl (hands/knees, 1 or 2 times to actually lay on trail and scoot) or take wide long detours in the woods because of all the branches. Other than that it was a great hike. There were 10 day hikers and 2 campers.

Private homeowners at Hill Lake have gated off this trail. Apparently there were too many mountain bikers up and down the access road and around the lake itself, which is private property.
