North Georgia Mountain
Outfitters, Ellijay

Monday, July 8, 2002

Hiked Sunday 7 July 2002. Hiked a loop from Lake W. Scott to Slaughter Gap(2.7 mi), up to Blood Mtn. summit(1 mi) and back to the gap(1 mi), then from Slaughter Gap to Jarrard Gap(2.2 mi), then back to the lake(1.2 mi) for a total of about 8.1 miles. The latter half of Slaughter Gap Trail has a considerable, steady incline, which seemed more difficult than the ascent from the Gap to the top of Blood Mtn. Unfortunately it was quite hazy, so the views from the top of the mountain were not spectacular, although we could tell that on a clear day they would be just that. This could just as easily be hiked in opposite direction with Jarrard Gap Trail as the first leg. We took our time, and spent about 2 hours from Lake to Summit and 1 hr 45 min back. Excellent day hike, and the 1 mile loop trail around the lake was a relaxing and scenic post-hike cool down walk. Trailhead is about 45 min from Dahlonega.

The trail was Beutifull when i hit it last, i started on Jarrard Gap hit the AT, ABSOLUTLEY breathtaking views all the to the top of Blood mtn via Slaughter Gap (nearly a double-back to get on the blood mtn trail.) The view from on top of blood mountain was stunning with the low level clouds and mist. After singing the register in the shelter I continued down the trail to the store a neels gap to resupply (I started out with a bayonet and a pack filled with water bottles) Ascended Blood took one last look over the sweet georgia mountains (nearly shedding a tear I might add) and took the same path back to camp at Winfeild Scott as soon as i got back it started to pour down rain, but after the rain let up i led my rag-tag group of siblings back up the trail but this time when we were coming back, the whined and wanted to use the Bird Train because it was flatter. The bird trail was a beutiful trail leading through a rockfeild where it is easy to loose the trail. In retrospect i recommend this trail system to anyone novice or expert. Four stars says I!

Monday Oct 15, 2001 Air was cool and crisp and colors fantastic. There is a detour sign at the beginning because a bridge is out. The trail gets a little confusing but well worth the effort. If you are going to make a loop out of the best way is to use Jarrard gap, AT, and Slaughter gap in that order. fantastic.

Hiked the trail from Lake Winfield Scott to the AT. Very easy ascent to the AT and nice additonal camp sites to the left, if the Lake Winfield Scott sites are all full.. mlb's

I would rate this trail easy, if it wasn't for one noticable incline which I found difficult while carrying my two year old daughter.
