One of Georgia's best kept secrets. The falls are easy to get to and well worth the effort of the drive down the Forest Service road. Due to the slow speed on the road the trip seemed longer than it was. Worth the effort for anyone that loves water falls.

Hiked the falls trail this weekend. Parts of trail were a little washed out due to recent rains, so be prepared to get your feet a bit muddy. One of the most beautiful I have seen in Georgia. We hiked down the steep slope from the trail to get to the river then hiked/waded upstream (after taking boots off) to the falls and stood right at the base of the cascade -Awsome!

Lovely drive to the trail head. Before the bridge on the walking path to the main falls there is a little path to the right that will lead you to another falls. Also, great primitave camping, too.

We hiked to the observation point on Sep 13th 2003. This is a brief hike from the rear of the campground. Very easy hike and probably not more than a 1/10th of a mile from the parking spaces. Very pretty falls; but it was late afternoon when we arrived and our photo shoot was brief as the lighting went away in a hurry. The FS road #44 is rough and narrow for the approximate 5 mile journey to the campground; so be prepared for an hour round-trip travel from state highway 75. (maximum speed on FS 44 15-20 mph and much slower in places)

We spent four days of our honeymoon at the campground at Horse Trough Falls. It was wonderful, we only saw the Camp Hosts pass us by in the morning and afternoon to make sure that all was well. We hiked several different areas, found several falls and large pools for swimming. We never saw any bears, but heard to keep an eye out for them. I would recommend it to anyone, with the River alongside almost every campsite it is a very tranquil and beautiful area!

It's probably been 10 - 12 years since we found these falls. We had a hand drawn map that listed all of the falls in the area, and the final comment after the directions was,"You will thank me once you find the falls." How true. There was no camping area back then. In fact a family in a pick up truck was coming from the falls and pulled along side of our Caravan. They didn't find the falls, but being the adventuresome family we are, we pressed on. All of a sudden I looked up above us on the road, and there was the pickup - they managed to turn around on that road and followed us. We did find the falls and our kids had a great time. We even found a bar of soap near one of the small tub-like areas near the top of the falls.

I appreciated very much the hiker who added more specific directions. I didn't even have to turn around to find the road! The road to the park was hell on my Honda and it took forever to go 5 miles, but the falls were very pretty and the campground is great too. I would love to camp there, but would be nervous if an emergency occured do to the remoteness. Yes I am a city slicker and proud of it!!!

I agree with Chris. Horse trough falls is not hard to find, I also have been going there since the 80's. It's a beautiful place. It's too bad that they don't want you to go to the falls any more, there is a platform to view from now. You used to be able to walk right up to the bas of the falls without hardly getting your shoes wet. It is a great photo spot.

The hike to the falls was very easy. It takes a drive to get back to the trail, but I thought it was worth it. A very pretty waterfall. I think low volume falls are the best.

Whoever complained about the windy, BUMPY roads leading to this campground and water fall is definitely a city-slicker!!!! Whoever said it was hard to find, is also a city-slicker!!!! I started camping in this area in the early 1980's. Back then, you almost had to have a four wheel drive just to make it more than a mile down the dirt road. Most people who camped here in the 80's, didn't even know that Horse Trough Falls existed. I never told many people about the water fall, or even the area, because I wanted to keep it primitive! This area used to be truely primitive, but it has been forever changed by man and developed camping. It is still a beautiful area, but it's obvious, with the gravel roads, developed campsites, foot bridges, wooden platforms and signs everywhere, that man has changed the area forever! It's a shame that it is no longer so primitive that one could camp there for days without ever seeing another person. So don't complain, the roads are in excellent shape now, compared to the primitive days!!!!

Update to Directions: (Very hard to find) - From Helen go about 8-10 miles north on a windy road to the top of a mountain. At the top is Unicoi Gap (You will see many hikers, and a parking) - TURN BACK AROUND and head back twoard Helen about 75 ft from Unicoi Gap on the right hand side will be a sign for "Chatahooche Wildlife Management Area". This sign is on FS44 or "Wilkes Creek Rd". Follow the windy and VERY BUMPY road 5 miles into a campground. Go to the very back end of the campground and you will see a marked trailhead. This is a Beautiful, very quiet, and hidden falls. Not many people can find it so it is not crowded, well maintained, and flat out awesome. Note: I have heard from more than one hiker of bear activity at Unicoi Gap, and there is an unusual amount of "Do not feed the bear" signs. We didn't see any, but pay attention.

Loved the falls, but hated the drive on Wilkes Creek Road! Is it supposed to be 2-way?? Didn't know what I'd do if I met another car on some of those turns!

Anna ruby's is so pretty! And the climb is really easy. I recommend to go at night to see the fox fire, and again during the day so you can see the beauty of the falls, and the creek.
