North Georgia Mountain
Outfitters, Ellijay

Wednesday, June 22, 2005

I was privileged to see the falls a day after a very hard rain. The amount of water coming over the Duke’s creek portion of the falls was creating a very fine mist that covered the observation deck bringing the temperature down several degrees. The trail down was very well traveled and smooth except for one tree that had fallen on the lower leg of the path. There was room to cross under the fallen tree without much trouble. This is a must do hike as the falls and the surrounding area are beautiful. I will be going back in the fall to make this one again to see all of the trees change. One note to mention is that tracked the trail with my GPS and once we came out it said we had walked 3 miles and not the 2.2 that he trial is reported to be so be warned.

I just returned from a trip to North Georgia. After hiking at Dukes Creek and Raven Cliff Falls, I realized that Anna Ruby was way over-rated. My husband and I, along with a couple of our friends agreed that these two falls were definitely the highlight of our trip. BEAUTIFUL!!

This trail is very easy, and the views and the falls are amazing and definitely worth stopping for. I hiked it in March, the same day as the Raven's Cliff trail about a mile up the road. It's a long way down to the falls, but it doesn't feel like it. Past the overlook area the path is a boardwalk for a while, with several flights of stairs. The long switchbacks are barely sloped except for the ends where they turn. Except for the last level, the path is wide and mostly even, and the observation decks at the bottom are huge. There's a $2 parking fee, and restrooms in the parking lot plus a few picnic tables.

The scenery along the trail is beautiful. Mountain Laurel and cedar's add lovely color in the dead of winter. The trail was in excellent condition and the falls breathtaking.

We hiked this trail on Sunday morning. It was a lovely hike. Hiking in is all downhill, so of course, hiking out is all uphill, but it was worth it! Our seven year old made the hike with minimal whining.

First trip to the falls and was well worth the trip. Wonderful weather and scenery made this January hike all that it could be.

Bryant and Yvonne Betsill Fayetteville, GADate of visit 12/28/03 Time about 4:00 pm A few leftovers from Helen were parked there but we met most on the way out. Water was running a fair amount. The trail was clear of limbs and trees. If someone wanted to help a person in a wheelchair down to the falls they could get to the entrance to the viewing platforms at the bottom. However the trip back up would be exhausting, might need several people to help. The grade is gentle and an easy walk even for a heart paitent. Tempurture dropped dramaticaly near the falls and with water powered wind picked up as well. We passed about three groups on our way out. I think they may have wished they had a flashlight before they found their cars. The valley is very narrow and the sun had left it in shadows hours before we got there. The orange sunlight was luminunating Yonah Mountain that can be seen down the valley to the south from the viewing area in front of the pit latrines. Hey not the best of viewing areas but it was a view and has benches. Keep Clear Bryant & Yvonne

Well marked and easy to follow.

Hiked down to the falls on 8/1/03. It had been raining hard for several days before our hike, and the falls were really "roaring". At the over look platform, you had to shout to be heard above the falls. Overall, one of the finest I have seen in the south.

Hiked Dukes Creek Falls on Tuesday, October 23,01. Very well-maintained trail with some fencing at more dangerous places. Wonderful scenery and the falls were beautiful. The steps at one of the switchbacks and the boardwalks made this an easy hike although being physically uconditioned even for this easy hike made the climb back up hill very slow. A walking stick would be helpful for the walk back to the start of the trail.

Me and my boyfriend went up for the day and hiked Raven Falls nearby. We passed Dukes Creek on the way and almost didn't go back. We are very glad we did. The trails are in great shape. The falls are beautiful. Some of the best we have been to. The picnic area is nice and clean as well. The signs say 1 mile hike. We knew it was aleast 2.5.

Duke's Creek trail is in great condition right now with the water being as low as it is. For those that choose to camp at Duke's Creek, the trail begins 3/4mi. further upstream from the lookout trailhead. This portion of the trail is often difficult to access due to the stream being high, but with a lack of rain over the past several months, the trail is easily accessable. I highly recommend this not only for a day hike, but for a good overnight campsite for those that wish to kick it up a notch! Also, the trail is very dog friendly, but remember to keep them on leashes or we will lose the privledge.

This is a wonderful hike. However, the climb out can be taxing for those folks not use to physical activity. Take plenty of water and rest often. Great place for kids to explore near the base of the falls.

The RT distance is actually 2.2 miles! Important to note for inexperienced hikers looking for easy as EASY! There is a sign at the beginning that tells you how long it is. Hiked it 3/26/00 and it was wonderful!

Enjoyed the trail and falls on October 22. I noted several round holes about 10 inches in diameter in the rock beneath the highest observation deck at the falls. These appear to be man-made so I assume they may be related to an earlier deck or perhaps to some gold mining activity. Any information on these holes will be appreciated.

Additional information: (from sign in path pointing to falls) If you walk away from the direction of the arrow (upstream) a less populated and short walk leads to a dam in the river which is perfect for rock skipping. A primitive campsite is on the hill across the deep water. An additional but pointless trail is also hidden around the first bend going towards the falls--this only leads to an impassible barbed wire DOT area and away from the falls.

The trail is easy in most respects because it has been graded smooth by the State or County and zig zags at a pitch that most all people can handle, but it is, never-the-less, uphill all of the way back up to the parking lot. Older people need to take this into account.

Great spot for a picnic and to get away from the bussiness of Helen.
