North Georgia Mountain
Outfitters, Ellijay

I walk the trail at Coopers Furnace at least three times a week when it is open. I usually see at least one deer, but I have seen wild turkey and fox in the trail. It does have some steep parts, but it is a very enjoyable hike.

My children and I hiked the Coopers Furnace Trail about a week and a half ago. At the Beaver Pond, bear right and follow the trail up the hill. We made the mistake of going straight at the Beaver Pond, which included some very steep terrain, to the point we had to hold on to rocks and trees to go up it. It was a rough climb and we later found out from the Park attendant on duty at the time that it was longer, about a "half of a mile longer, and very steep and rugged". It is a good trail with alot of scenery and wildlife but rememebr to bear right and stay on course at the Beaver Pond, which we didnt do.

I too have never seen a snake on my half dozen or so walks but you never know... This is a fairly quick, pleasant walk. Seems like there are always a lot of birds in this area. The trail loops from the lake. From the lake, take the trail up to the visitors center and the Dam overlook. From there you can take the trail back or come down via the service road that leads back to the lake. Walking up the service road from the lake is murder on the knees believe me! Walk up the trail and down the road for a pleasant time!

Make sure the Cooper Iron Works park is open, as it closes seasonally. Haven't ever seen a snake on the trail. View from the dam (up top) is beautiful.

Be very careful at the beaver pond. The wildlife is nice, but part of the wildlife when we were there included more than A half dozen Copperheads in the edge of the water!
