North Georgia Mountain
Outfitters, Ellijay

Saturday, September 8, 2001

Sept 2, 2001 I am very out of shape, and it was steep. The length of the trail is so short though that it gave a nice feeling of accomplishment at the top. There is a shuttlebus to take you down, if you get to the top and decide not to walk down. The entire path is paved.

Once you reach the top of the mountain you realize it was well worth the hike. The view is awesome. You feel like you're on top of the world. It is very windy on top so if you have sensitive ears you should probably bring some ear muffs or cotton balls. The trail is steep, but there are alot of resting places on the way.

I hiked the Brasstown Bald trail in June of 1999. This was my first visit to Brasstown Bald. I was hoping for a hiking trail from the base of the mountain up. I didn't realize that the trail was only a half mile trail that started near the top of the mountain and led to the visitor center. Anyway, it was a very nice, but brief hike. Unfortunately, it was very foggy at the top of the mountain, so I didn't experience any good views. We will probably visit the Bald again in July of 2000. My previous hiking experiences include two hikes up Grandfather Mountain (5,964 ft.), plus many hikes straight up the steep ski slopes of Sugar Mountain (5,300 ft.)during the summer. Both of these mountains are in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina near Banner Elk.

I hiked this trail yesterday July 3. But, I started at GA 180 Jacks Knob trail to the top- 3 miles 1825 ft gained. You need to add Jacks Knob trail. I've also finished Jacks Knob to Chattahoochee gap. This is one of the toughest short distance hikes anywhere. From GA 180 to the parking lot is 1500 ft gained. It is a calf-buster.
