North Georgia Mountain

I did this hike on Saturday Dec 18, 2004 in one day. If I was to do it over again, I would make this an overnighter, as the ups and downs and (what seems to be) steep uphills were difficult, especially on the knees. This section is not as scenic as other parts of the trail, but does have some spots for some great views.

We hiked from Hogpen to Unicoi this past weekend(Oct 23-24th).We started at Hogpen on Saturday around 9am. There was alot of people on the trail. The weather was chilly in mid 50's & was quite foggy. We hiked 10 miles to Chattahoochee Gap and stayed the night. On Sunday we woke to light rain & fog. We made it to Unicoi with no problems. Our 14 mile hike was not bad at all. The weather did cause alot of the rocks to be very slippery. We also could see alot of damage from Ivan, but the AT volunteers did a great job cleaning up.The fall foilage is off to a great start, but in a few weeks it should be much better. Also, the parking lots fill up very fast. It would be wise to get there as early as possible.

I hiked Hogpen to Unicoi in May of 1998 with my Son Adam and my brother-in-law Bruce. We had a great time and found the scenery to be wonderful. The trail was very well maintained and had no trouble finding water. We spent the night at in the shelter at Blue Mountain. Decent to Unicoi was tough. So far we've done 186 miles of section hikes from springer to unicoi and I've loved every step of it. Next is Newfound Gap to Davenport Gap Oct. 2004.

This was a nice little weekend trip. Decent water sources at both shelters (Low Gap and Blue Mountain) and not too strenuous. During the summer, there aren't really any views, but I guess that's sort of par for the course. Supposedly the bears are out in force in this area but we didn't see any (someone on the trail said he had seen one ten minutes earlier though, and another guy said he was chased out of a shelter the night before. Yikes). We took some pictures of our trip and you can see them here: http://katebroun.com/gallery/misc/2002/09/hogpen_unicoi/content1.shtml

I hiked this trail over the weekend of 5/17/02 and found the trail to be difficult in some parts but easy to moderate in most places.Hogpen to Low gap is pretty easy, but the decents get tough sometimes. However, the 8 miles to Blue mountain are mostly uphill and can get be difficult at times. Then it a Breze to Unicoi for the most part. For Some of the Acents,Especially the low to Blue Mtn.,It would be a great asset to have Hiking poles because there are many rocks and it can be tough to keep your balance while hiking with a pack. As far as Shelters go,I did not stay at Low gap but it seemed convenient for the most part because it incuded a water sorce and a picnic table. The only Negative thing there is to say about this Shelter is that there is no tarp and it got very cold when I went. However I did stay at the shelter on Blue Mtn and it was nice also, but not as nice as the on at Low gap.It is a little bit bigger and has a covered cooking area, but when i went the tarp that was provided didnt do much to stop the wind.Thats all I have to say and remember-take gloves even if you dont think its going to be cold, and ALWAYS prepare for rain. We hiked starting at Unicoi Gap and hiked south. First mile and half were very difficult. Steep and almost treacherous climb. At the ridge the altitude smoothed out but there was still many up and downs. There were a couple of clean water sources. We had full packs and the upward climb was tough. Still it was worth the experience.

Hiking South to North on a day hike from Hogpen to Cold Springs Gap. Started out at 8:00 AM on Wednesday October 29, 2001.I have been walking the AT on a series of day hikes. I park my car and do an out and back. It has taken 7 years, or about 10 day hikes to get here. Of course I have been travelling North and South each time. I bite off a little more than I should on this trip I went about 9 miles North. It was a wonderful Fall day. Travelling North seemed to me like a moderate hike. However, the return hike was not. I was now faced with walking 9 miles back to my car, and I just didn't remember that many decends on the way North. Poplar Gap Stamp, Sheep Rock, Poor Mountain, Strawberry Top and Hogpen Gap were tough. South to North was a nice hike, North to South was not. I get to go out on the Trail about 2-3 days a year. I have yet spent the night out on the Trail. I would imagine that will happen soon. The out and backs are starting to kill me. My goal is to hike to N.Carolina. So far it has only taken me 7 years. My dog Max has been with me most of the way. It's a lot longer in dog years.

This trail is has decent scenery, and is a challenging workout! My group did a total of 14.5 miles from Hogpen to Unicoi over two days. We camped out at the top of the mountain, and water was a challenge to attain. The next day we hiked along a gorge, and it seemed to never end! At the top of the gorge, you start the treacherous decent into Unicoi, with the trail being mostly about a foot wide and very dangerous, watch your step! At the end of the day, our feet were killing us but we were glad to have done it.
