This past weekend my backpacking partner Trailfrogs and I hiked from Springer to Hogpen, 37 miles in 2 days. My feet hurt, but other then that I would say the trails are very clear. We did not see very many people on the trail until we got near Blood Mtn. This was a lot of mileage and I would recommend this for a three day trip rather then two, but do-able. I would have to say the only place that stuck out during my trip was Sassafras Mtn and Testnatee Gap to Hogpen Gap. Sassafras was pretty tough climb, but what was worse was going up two more PUDS (pointless ups and downs) afterward. Testnatee to Hogpen is straight up for .89 miles. Not bad without a pack, but after 36 miles it was bad.

I found this page of georgiatrails.com while doing research in preparation for my first hike on the AT. Thanks to the others for giving reports though I wish there were more recent postings. After reading this page I have decided to go Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from Amicoloa Falls to Woody Gap (at least) for my first time ever on the AT. I am so excited. I promise a full trail report of this section as soon as I come Sunday night. Wish us luck on a black bear sighting!

I hiked this section along with 2 friends, from Woody Gap to Amicalola Falls this past weekend. It took approximately 18.5 hours. The views were outstanding especially from the top of Springer Mountain. We found a number of trees across the trail in places and had to climb over them. Suprising, these were relatively close to USFS Road 42 and we were suprised that they had not been removed. The climbing was especially difficult on Sasafrass with the decent being particularly tough. There were plenty of mountain springs were water could be replenished. The only lodge we stayed at was atop Springer Mountain and found that the mice were as plentiful as we had been warned they were. They even climed the cables that are supplied to prevent bears from getting into your food and nibbled into several packages of freeze dried foods and Gorp. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. We plan on the next section sometime in the spring heading from Woody Gap North. This should give my sore knees time to recover.

The approach trail kicked my butt and I fancy myself a pretty decent hiker. I was soundly winded...but then again, it might just be that we were haulin a$$ to get out of some bad hail that was coming down on us.

I found this section of the AT very challenging. I am not a wuss and consider myself to be in great shape, but would still rate this as strenuous -- definitely not for the meek or mild!!!

water availability is good

WATER get it when and where you can. Springer Shelter was dry. Next stop is Stover Creek, refill there. Three Forks has plenty. Long Falls is next. Do yourself a favor and check this out! No water to be found at Hawk Mountain Shelter.Lucky for my wife and I we ran into a local who gave us the best advice the whole trip. NO WATER BETWEEN HIGHTOWER GAP AND DEVILS KITCHEN! When you come off Hawk Mountain into Hightower Gap take a left onto USFS 69 and follow for about a .25 mile and on the right side of the road you will find a spring. This will be your last chance to stock up on water and just as the report stated "your hike so far has been fairly easy" believe me when I tell you the next 6 miles are a bit grueling!Plenty of water between Devil's Kitchn and Gooch's Gap.All in all the trail was awesome and cannot be described ONLY EXPERIENCED!

Water sources are not plentiful. Make sure you max out your water supply before passing it up. They are plentiful at some spots, but kust as you think they will stay that way you are wrong and the hills will definetly have you craving water!
