Hiked Andrews Cove Trail Friday July 8, 2005. Trail is in good shape and well marked. Hiked from Andrews Cove to Indian Grave Gap. As other reports indicate, this is a fairly strenuous hike. Enjoyed every minute!

Hiked Sunday May 23. Beautiful day with a temperature of 85. It was a nice well marked trail. I'm a lightweight hiker in a heavyweight body so the steep grade at the end got my attention. It wasn't too bad though. It took about an hour to get up but probably only 45 minutes to come down. A hiking stick would be useful due to the slick trail in the steep areas.

Camping at Andrews Cove has become more expensive: nightly fare nowadays is $10.00, May 2003. Trail parking is at the upper right hand side of the campground.

Three of us hiked this trail and let me tell you... it is strenuous! It says it is only 2 miles but it feels like 5! The majority of the trail is hilly , but the last stretch is unreal! It is straight up for quite a ways. It is so steep my ears were popping as we hiked it. We weren't really sure if we were at the end of the trail or not because there was nothing to determine the end , but we stopped soon after we reached the top of the "mountain". It was a pretty hike with lots of ferns convering the ground and water to hike along. We almost stepped on a snake that was crossing the trail in front of us. We think it was only a harmless one though. This is a good hike, but just be ready to climb! The bugs are numerous so wear your repelent!

The trail is a nice stroll. The forest is very open, not much scrub. The last 1/3 of a mile is a bit steep. It is the steepest that I have ever hiked. It took me something like an hour and 30 minutes to hike to the top of the gap and maybe 30 mins to come back. Thats how steep it was. Since it was late fall and there were a lot of leaves, I was basically sliding back down to the campsite.

Just finished the hike today. The last third of the trail was moderate to strenous. the combination of my day pack and the incline made for a good sweat. I base camped in Andrews cove hoping there would be some fishing;however, the water was too low. The camp sites are well maintained. The camp site also offers a hand pump well and A+ outhouse facilities. It is a nice place to go, and I plan on going back.

We hiked the Andrews Cove Trail to Indian Grave Gap, and then joined the Appalachian Trail for a 4.3 mile hike to the top of Tray Mountain. The last section of this trail is extremely steep, at a rate of 100 ft. elevation gain every .1 mile. This steep portion of the trail is strenuous while the other portions vary from easy to moderate. All in all, I would rate the trail Moderate to Strenuous. The trail becomes very rocky after the first part of the trail and lots of small rivulets cross the trail. Going down can be dangerous with the rocks and water.

The trail is fairly moderate throughout, except for the final 1/3 mile (coming from the campground to the AT), which I would consider moderate to strenuous. The grade on this part of the trail must be 8-9 , and is a steady climb. Despite its short length, this trail is a good workout for intermediate hikers and has some absolutely beautiful vistas and rhododendron groves. A great way to spend a weekend morning.
